About Lyngenfjord Landscape Protection Area

Situated along the eastern shores of the Lyngen Fjord in Troms og Finnmark county, the Lyngenfjord Landscape Protection Area encompasses a diverse and ecologically significant landscape characterized by sharp alpine peaks, steep fjord walls, sweeping valleys, and a mosaic of coastal and montane ecosystems. This protection area was established to preserve the distinctive blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage found within the Lyngen Alps and surrounding fjord environment. The region hosts a variety of habitats, including subarctic forests, wetlands, and tundra, supporting an array of wildlife species such as sea eagles, otters, reindeer, and arctic foxes. Historically, the area has been used by the indigenous Sámi people for reindeer herding and fishing, traditions that continue today and contribute to the cultural landscape. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the Lyngenfjord Landscape Protection Area for its exceptional hiking and climbing routes, many of which feature dramatic views of the fjord and snow-capped mountains. The area’s waterways are prime locations for kayaking and fishing, while winter months see enthusiasts pursue cross-country skiing and ice climbing. Key landmarks include the Lyngen Alps—home to some of Norway’s highest peaks—and the fjord’s deep waters that attract diverse marine life. Visitors appreciate the region’s remote and relatively untouched nature, with opportunities to experience both tranquil natural settings and the vibrant local culture of small coastal villages. The protection status helps maintain the area's pristine environment while allowing sustainable recreational access. Due to its northern latitude, the area also offers spectacular displays of the Northern Lights during the winter season, adding to its year-round appeal.
